Annabel Ives is a founding member of Guardian Chambers and was previously in chambers with Lester Cordwell.
Annabel Ives was admitted to the bar in 1999 and has practiced exclusively in criminal law since then. She was employed by senior counsel for 2 years and since 2001 has been in practice on her own account.
She has steadily built up her experience and category levels since 1999 and while having a vast experience in the summary jurisdiction is also well versed in the trial jurisdiction. Her practice is largely based at the Auckland District Court but is also happy to travel to other courts.
Many of Annabel’s regular clients have had her as their lawyer since their first appearance in the District Court in their late teens. Those who regrettably continue to offend consistently over the years turn to her to represent them whether it is to obtain bail; defend the charges or to obtain the least restrictive sentence.
Over the years some of Annabel’s proudest moments in her practice have been when clients who she has acted for over the years finally make the positive changes to turn their lives around whether through formal rehabilitation programmes or simply a change of direction.
In addition she actively keeps up to date with developments in criminal law and the law of evidence and is particularly well versed in Bill of Rights / Search & Seizure developments. Annabel believes that an important component of the role of an effective criminal advocate involves policing the police to ensure that the rights of accused are protected.
Annabel also has considerable experience and knowledge of multi-accused interception trials having appeared in several long High Court drug trials. Such experience has given her an in depth knowledge of the law of conspiracy and various other issues which arise in such trials.
