Matthew Goodwin, one of the founding members of Guardian Chambers, is a specialist trial advocate and criminal defence lawyer. He is highly experienced in dealing with serious and complex cases and has a reputation for consistently securing successful outcomes for his clients.

Matthew’s criminal experience originated with six years employment as a Crown Prosecutor in Auckland and London, followed by 20 years or more at the defence bar specialising in jury trial work. Matthew has been instructed by the Ministry of Justice to appear as “amicus curiae” to assist self represented accused in the District and High Courts.

He has extensive experience in defending clients as lead defence lawyer in high-profile criminal trials, including murder, manslaughter, serious violence, armed robbery, kidnapping and sexual violation.

Matthew’s sound judgement and careful preparation have ensured he has developed a strong practice dealing with multi accused drug importation, manufacture and supply cases, which involves close analysis of vast amounts of documentary evidence and electronic data and providing well-calculated strategic advice to clients.

He has successfully acted for numerous clients charged with white collar crime, money laundering, tax evasion and occupational safety and health prosecutions involving fatal accidents, often being instructed during the critical investigation phase. In appropriate cases he will access the skills of forensic experts and private investigators to ensure his clients are properly resourced in advancing their arguments in court.

Matthew is dedicated to achieving the best possible results for his clients. He is tenacious, skilful and compelling in presenting his client’s arguments in court, whether addressing judge or jury. Matthew is dedicated to providing excellent client care and is regarded by clients as giving advice which is empathetic and realistic.

Matthew is a member of the NZ Criminal Bar Association, including its subcommittees and was previously Convener of the Bay of Plenty Courts Committee for many years and Council member of Waikato & Bay of Plenty District Law Society Council. He regularly mentors junior counsel within Guardian Chambers and externally as to case presentation and strategy.
